Zappos and Amazon signal what's to come

zapposThere's no argument. As CEO, Tony Hsieh's main duty as the captain of the Zappos ship was to make sure everyone made money. And to make sure that within a few days notice, our tootsies were comfortably outfitted with... whatever we wanted.

One of the most interesting aspects of this recession, and actually the entire ‘internet economic period', is that just like most new economic trends that have taken place over the last twenty years, the United States' failures have served as a model for the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this hasn't been an example the EU and Middle East, Far East and rest of the globe has followed in order to avoid the economic minefields the US has fallen victim to, but rather just an ear-piercing warning siren of what's to come.

Silicon Valley represents the best and brightest, most innovative and intelligent, and most future-proofed business models driving developed economies forward, but also serves as a forecasting mechanism for imminent failure. What do we attribute this to?

America's failure to publicize its overzealous ambitions and short-sighted gambles? Or the rest of the world's blinding charge into the abyss of America's first attempts?

Either way, let's hope that Zappos's concession to Amazon's much deeper pockets is a wake up call the internet doesn't belong to the United States. It belongs to whoever gets there first. And in this case, ‘there' is nothing more than an idea. So it is truly open. Finally.
